Elephant Welfare Site Visit & Consultation | The Bush Camp, June 2025

On June 2, 2025, a team of elephant health and welfare experts from Thailand and the United States carried out the 5th official site visit and consultation at The Bush Camp.

The visit was led by Dr. Chatchote Thitaram, Director of the Center of Elephant and Wildlife Health, and Dr. Janine Brown from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (USA). The consultation focused on key areas such as elephant breeding management, health care practices, and overall welfare and living conditions of the elephants. The team also followed up on recommendations from previous visits and provided guidance to support ongoing improvements at the camp.

As part of the visit, a preliminary health assessment was conducted on all elephants. The results showed that both physical and mental health conditions were in good standing for every individual. The experts also recommended that each elephant be given opportunities to walk at least 10 kilometers per day to promote physical fitness and mental stimulation.

This collaborative effort highlights the continued commitment to high standards in elephant care, academic research, and sustainable conservation. The goal is to ensure that elephant management practices in Thailand meet internationally recognized animal welfare standards, particularly within eco-tourism contexts.
